Emergency care for Operational K9s

Emergency care for Operational K9s

We are always looking for more ways to help…

Not ones to rest on our laurels we are always seeking new areas to keep people and now K9s safer. Check back from time to time, who knows what we’ll come up with next.

The Operational K9 community is medically under-served, we want to help change that. From Military and Law Enforcement Handlers, to Search and Rescue teams, even everyday dog owners that want to know what to do, we can help you gain the knowledge and confidence to respond to an injured canine, yourself or someone else. Find a class or contact us to schedule one.

Historically , Law Enforcement and Military K9s are being deployed more frequently during tactical operations.  This evidence is clear as we continue to gather statics and lessons learned during these missions.  With operational tempos increasing, Law Enforcement, Military and Search & Rescue K9 handlers are being injured or wounded more frequently during tactical operations.

VAMS 24 hour Tactical Medicine K9 Handler Course is designed to meet the tactical medical pre-vet and pre-hospital needs of operational K9 handlers.  This three day comprehensive course is designed to provide the K9 handler with the tactical medical education, skills and tools required to increase survivability in the event that either are injured or wounded.  It is imperative that the handler knows how to Stop Major Bleeding, Manage Airways and Respiratory Compromise during their mission in order to prevent shock and death.

Education, skills and practical scenario training provides our students with the essential trauma and medical first responder fundamentals required to provide immediate Life Saving Interventions during tactical operations.  During our course, students will learn the critical thinking skills, tools and treatments required to perform systematic trauma victim assessments and manage a sick or trauma patient utilizing the M.A.R.C.H.E. treatment protocol recommended by the Tactical Combat Casualty Care Committee.  Students learn this approach and practice managing their own, partners or K9 injuries using Individual First Aid Kits, M.A.R.C.H.E. protocols and gaining experience providing this essential medical care during tactical operational scenario practicals.

Survivability during tactical and operational deployments are not a given, education and training are instrumental when Law Enforcement and Military K9 handlers find themselves wounded or injured which is imperative for the best chance of survival when combating the Triad of Death.

As K9 operations increase, the probability that Pre-Hosptial Providers may encounter a K9 patient has grown expediently over the past decade.  providers today need to understand the importance of having the ability manage a sick or a traumatically injured K9.
